the Rave in Milwaukee, WI
Friday, January 12, 2001
KH played w/ Suite 13 and Marvelkind. We took the Crack Van as usual. Tim
drove, Julie navigated in the passenger side, Phil and Sam had the middle
seat, and I was in the back with Tom. It was just...insanity.... in its pure,
unadulterated form. sweet christ on the cross, i'm lucky i lived to speak of
the night. it took 3 hours to get there with the horrible traffic. at least
with good music and great company, we had a fairly decent time getting here,
except when a barry white lookalike pulled up next to us and started making
those weird faces porn stars make juuust before they go for it. after an
attack on a speeding van with swastikas all over it & skinheads glaring at us
inside (we don't dig the nazi vibe, thank you), we picked up speed a bit and
got to the Rave at around 8.
As soon as we got in, we saw KH on the tiny stage in the claustrophobic
bar, setting up. KH went on at about 8:30 or 8:45. they only played 5 or 6
songs and i'm not exactly sure which ones.....same old story..... After the
show, we stood around for a few minutes watching the guys meander around the
bar, mingling with various drunks and fans. I gave Greg a tape because we had
previously discussed music, particularly the Descendents, who, as it turns
out, Greg is a fan of as well (good boy).
I chatted with Mat for a bit about the show. In some stupid brazen act of
annoying fan-like behavior, I suggested that KH look into the SP tribute
show....gutsy at the time, but I guess it was for the common good. I gave him
a piece of paper with the demo submission details.
I ended up talking to Greg for like half an hour. We spoke of the
direction music is taken and the painful fact that while he was 17 when
"Gish" was released, I was 7. Insert embarassing blush here.
Suite 13 is evil. Marvelkind ran circles around them musically and
should've kicked their asses. The end.
